An Introduction to Dancing Cat Records

Dancing Cat Records was founded in 1983 by pianist George Winston to record other musicians who have influenced his career and musicians he felt needed to be preserved for future generations. In 1988 Geroge moved the focus of Dancing Cat Records to documenting and preserving slack key guitar music. (based in California)

History of Dancing Cat Records
Dancing Cat Records was established by pianist George Winston in 1983 to promote and preserve Hawaiian slack key guitar and other music and musicians who have influenced him In the 1980's Dancing Cat released recordings covering many different artists including Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete, classical guitarist Michael Lorimer, folk guitarist George Cromarty, New Orleans rhythm and blues style pianist Professor Longhair, New Orleans singer and songwriter Shad Weathersby, and an album by vocalist Sylvia Kohan. Dancing Cat also released the soundtrack to the children's story "The Velvfeteen Rabbit", narrated by Meryl Streep with solo piano accompaniment by George Winston. After those albums were released, Dancing Cat Productions began focusing primarily on slack key guitar and began releasing a series of recordings known as the "Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Series". Between 1994 and 2007 Dancing Cat Records released 39 albums in the series, featuring the music of Keola Beamer, Bob Brozman, the late Sonny Chillingworth, Cindy Combs, the late Barney Isaacs, Ledward Kaapana, George Kahumoku, Jr., Moses Kahumoku, Ray Kane, Dennis Kamakahi, Ozzie Kotani, George Kuo, the late Leonard Kwan, James Bla Pahinui and Cyril Pahinui.
