Hawaiian falsetto singer Benny Kalama was born on
June 29, 1916 and he died on September 21, 1999.

Played in the McKinley High School Band
Played with Leonard Red Hawk and the Waikikians
Won Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (HARA)
Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993.
Was inducted into the falsetto Music Hall
of Fame on October 13, 2006.
He is credited for discovering Alan Apaka when
Apaka was a student at Roosevelt High School. Kalama
later was Apaka's musical director.
In the 1960's Kalama succeeded Al Perry as the musical
director of the "Hawaii Calls" radio program.
He performed with Kamahele and Alan Akaka until 1997,
and he died two years later at age 80 or 82.
