Hula Festivals and Contests

Information about hula festivals and hula contests in Hawaii and other parts of the world. Includes hula contests and festivals on Oahu Island and Hawaii Island in Hawaii and also in California and Japan.

Hula Festivals in Hawaii

Merrie Monarch Hula Festival (Hawaii Island)
Annual week-long hula festival held in the town of Hilo on the east side of Hawaii Island. Festival was founded nearly 50 years ago.

Prince Lot Hula Festival (Oahu Island)
This one day hula festival takes place every year in Moanalua Gardens in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The 31st annual event will take place July 19, 2008.

King Kamehameha Hula Competition (Oahu Island)
This hula competition takes place every year in both Hawaii and Japan. The 35th annual Hawaii contest took place in the Blaisdell Center Arena in Honolulu June 21, 2008.

Queen Liliuokalani Keiki Hula Contest (Oahu Island)
Every year since 1976 the Kalihi-Palama Culture and Arts Society has presented this three night children's hula competition. In recent years it has been held at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu. DVDs are available of many of the competitions. Typically takes place in July.

Iolani Luahine Hula Festival (Hawaii Island)
Hula festival established in 2003 to honor the memory of kumu hula Iolani Luahine. The 4th Semi-Annual He Lei Hiwa No `Iolani Luahine Hula Scholarship Awards Festival will take place January 30-31 2009 on the front lawn of the Kona Inn Shopping Village

Moku O Keawe International Festival (Hawaii Island)
The 3rd annual event took place November 5-9, 2008 at the Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Island of Hawaii. The event included a hula competition, hula workshops, and a craft fair.

World International Hula Festival (Oahu Island)
Hula dancers from all over the world travel to Honolulu to compete in this 3-day hula festival and contest at the Waikiki Shell in Kapiolani Park on Oahu. Typically takes place in November.

Hula Festivals Outside Hawaii

E Hula Mau (Long Beach, California)
This annual 3-day California hula competition takes place every Labor Day weekend. The 14th annual event will take place August 29-31, 2008 at the Terrace Theater of the Long Beach Convention Center.

George Naope Kane Hula Festival (Modesto, California)
This hula contest for men only takes place every year in Modesto, California. The 4th annual event took place August 9-10, 2008 at the Modesto Centre Plaza.

King Kamehameha Hula Competition (Japan)
This hula competition takes place every year in both Hawaii and Japan. The 9th annual Japan contest took place October 26, 2007 at the Gymnasium of the Komazawa Olympic Park in Tokyo.

Tahitian Dance Festival

Kiki Raina Tahiti Fete (Merced, California)
The 30th Annual Kiki Raina Tahiti Fete took place March 27-29, 2009 at the Merced County Fairgrounds. The event featured solo dancing, group dancing, and group drumming competition and food and craft booths. The 31st Annual Kiki Raina Tahiti Fete will take place in the same location March 26-28, 2010.

Tahiti Fete of San Jose and Hilo (California and Hawaii)
Tahitian dance competition held every year in two locations, San Jose in Northern California and Hilo on the east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Both events were canceled in 2009 but they are expected to take place again in 2010.
