Hawaiian Music History Timeline
A timeline of significant events in the history of Hawaiian music.
Eventually, when this page starts getting too long,
I will split it into chronological time periods, and when I do that
I will add a more information about each event.
A NOTE FROM KATHIE:
I'm just getting started on this long-term project so any
corrections or Hawaiian music dates you can provide will be much
appreciated. You can send me a message via
my Facebook page or you can send email to
kathiefry@gmail.com.

KATHIE'S NOTES TO SELF:
Did Gabby Pahinui first record Hiilawe in 1947 or 1955?
Hawaiian music, especially English-language hapa haole and jazz-influenced
Hawaiian music (which was not really very Hawaiian) was popular in the 1920's through 1940's
but interest began to fade in the 1950's.
Artists such as Gabby Pahinui and Eddie Kamae began
to revive interest in the 1960 and there was another
resurgence of interest in the 1970's when groups
such as the Sunday Manoa introduced a new contemporary
sound that still included elements of traditional
Hawaiian music.
